History

Following the FDA approval of the KeriMedical TOUCH prosthesis in July, Medartis decided to acquire the remaining 53% of the privately held company. The partnership originally began in 2020 and has not only expanded our expertise in joint replacement, but also grown our network of surgeons. Medartis acquires a 51% majority stake in the Brazilian company NeoOrtho. NeoOrtho specializes in trauma, craniomaxillofacial and spinal implants, focusing on making surgical solutions more accessible.

Change at the top of Medartis. Matthias Schupp, who has held various management positions in Europe and Latin America at the Straumann Group over the past 17 years, becomes CEO in November 2024. 

Celebration of the sale of the 1 millionth distal radius plate. 

The Distal Radius System 2.5 is a global solution for distal radius osteosynthesis and has been distributed in over 40 countries and is trusted by surgeons and patients worldwide with a Medartis Distal Radius Plate sold every 4.6 minutes. 

The privately owned orthopaedic company Nextremity Solutions Inc. in Warsaw, USA, becomes part of Medartis. The takeover is intended to give the US business a boost, because the American market ticks differently to the European one. The US Medtech company has development expertise and operates a modern 6 500m2 (69,500 square-foot) production area, which is expandable and will be used to serve regional market needs.

On 23 March 2018, Medartis is in the spotlight. In a challenging stock market year, Medartis dares to go public and is rewarded. The share price skyrockets, revealing a company market value of around CHF 600 million.

Acquisition of the Mimedis company, active in pre-operative planning and 3D printing of patient-specific implants.

A major step to grow in the foot and Ankle Business with the launch of the Hallux system 2.8, SpeedTip C 2.0,2.8 system and the CCS Extension with new diameters of 5.0 and 7.0. 

Launch of the new Radius System 2.5 (ADAPTIVE II Plates, FPL Plates, Hook Plates, Small Fragment Plates)  and additional new Instruments (Self-Holding Drill Sleeve, Instrument for Restoration of Volar Tilt and Plate Holding and Positioning Instrument) 

Introduction of cannulated compression screws 2.2/3.0 system as well as the Wrist arthrodesis system 2.5. 

Medartis is expanding the range of of its implants into the lower extremities (foot and ankles). In the upper extremities, implants for the elbow.

All under one roof: Medartis moves into the anchor tenant in the modern Stücki Business Park in Basel's working-class district of Kleinhüningen. Today, the Business Park is home numerous life science companies.

Medartis is launching another technology that sets new standards in the operating theatre.
SpeedTip, probably the sharpest screw in the world. Equally appreciated by surgeons: the HexaDrive screw head design, thanks to which the screw adheres to the screwdriver.

Medartis starts its own production. A modern production facility for screws and plates is built in the empty halls of the family-owned Tschudin + Heid company in Bretzwil, Basel-Land. Launch of the first Distal Radius System 2.5 (Fracture Plate, Correction Plate, Correction Plate with flap, Volar Frame Plate, Dorsal H-Plate) 

TriLock is launched: the first multidirectional, angle-stable locking system of its kind. This technology is the basis of the APTUS implant solution, which Medartis launches in the same year for hand and wrist surgery and later for the lower extremities. In the same year, Straumann and Miesch founded the International Bone Research Association (IBRA) with renowned surgeons in Zurich. The first scientific seminar and the first general assembly take place two years later at the Inselspital in Bern.

Initially still distributed via the dental sister-company Straumann Holding AG, Medartis is now selling its implants directly. It is founding a subsidiary in Umkirch, then in Vienna, in Lyon, in Batley, in Philadelphia. Over the years branches follow all over the world.

Foundation of Medartis AG with headquarters in Basel/Switzerland by Dr. h.c. Thomas Straumann. Acquisition of a small, independent specialist for oral and maxillofacial surgery and further development of the portfolio.

When Thomas father, Fritz Straumann, died in 1988, Thomas Straumann and his siblings faced a huge decision: What should they do with the company they were about to inherit? Thomas Straumann knew he wanted to build something of his own, focusing on the dental sector. The largest segment, orthopaedic implants, marketed under the "Synthes" brand, was sold to Rudolf Maag, who headed this business. The new company was given the name Stratec Medical and from then on wrote its own success story. 

Dr. h.c. Fritz Straumann (2nd generation) developed together with his engineers the first internal fixation implant to replace a missing tooth.

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Straumann founded the Institut Straumann AG which specialzed in metallurgy for the watchmaking industry.
